Two Killed in Stolen Vehicle Crash During Police Pursuit on I-55 in Gluckstadt
MADISON COUNTY, Miss. — Two individuals were killed on September 29 after a stolen vehicle crashed during a police chase on Interstate 55, authorities reported.
Gluckstadt police were alerted to a stolen silver Ford Escape traveling northbound. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle near the 113-mile marker, but the driver refused to pull over, prompting a pursuit.
The vehicle left the roadway just before Exit 119 and struck a sign pole. Both the driver and passenger were ejected from the vehicle. The passenger, 18-year-old Laqaughn Johnson of Jackson, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 16-year-old driver, also from Jackson, succumbed to injuries while being transported to UMMC Madison, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Joel Shows.
Investigations are ongoing. The vehicle’s theft and the subsequent police chase are under review by local authorities.
