Tractor-Trailer Cab Plunges into Delaware River Following Crash on Delaware Memorial Bridge
A bobtail tractor-trailer cab crashed off the southbound span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge early July 11, 2025.
The accident occurred around 3:40 a.m. when the tractor-trailer, traveling south, crossed three lanes of traffic, struck a concrete barrier, and fell into the river. The cab was located in approximately 20 feet of water at 10:45 a.m., according to the Delaware River and Bay Authority.
The driver is presumed dead, though authorities have not confirmed details about their identity or the presence of any passengers. Emergency personnel, including dive teams from New Castle County and Delaware State Police, are conducting search and recovery efforts.
As a result of the incident, two southbound lanes of the bridge were closed for several hours—one for ongoing construction and another due to the accident. All lanes have since reopened.
Authorities stated that the recovery operation includes securing the impact area to avoid unsafe debris from the bridge. Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
