Deadly Crash on Florida's Turnpike Leaves Three Dead
FORT PIERCE, Fla. — A crash on Florida's Turnpike on August 12 resulted in three fatalities when a semi-truck collided with a minivan, according to authorities.
Troopers reported that Harjinder Singh, 35, attempted an illegal U-turn near mile marker 170, placing his trailer in the direct path of the northbound minivan. The impact killed all three passengers in the van. Singh has since been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide.
Singh, an undocumented immigrant from India, held a valid California commercial driver's license. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis criticized the licensing, stating, “That should have never happened… He certainly shouldn't have gotten a commercial driver's license from California.”
Authorities revealed that after the crash, both Singh and a passenger fled to Sacramento. On August 16, U.S. Marshals arrested Singh in Stockton, California, following a tip from the Florida Highway Patrol. He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail, where an immigration detainer was filed on behalf of ICE.
U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi condemned California's sanctuary policies for enabling Singh to obtain a license, while U.S. Marshals Director Gadyaces Serralta hailed the arrest as a success for law enforcement.
The incident has reignited debates over immigration enforcement and public safety on highways.
