St. Lucie County, Fla. — An attorney representing an undocumented man involved in a fatal crash announced that his organization is pledging $100,000 to support the victims’ families.
During a Tuesday news conference, Attorney Gurpatwant Pannun of Sikhs for Justice stated the donation would be made to the office of Governor Ron DeSantis. “We want to begin by grieving with families who lost their loved ones in this tragic accident,” Pannun said.
Harjinder Singh, 28, faces three counts of vehicular homicide following the accident on the Turnpike, where he allegedly made an illegal U-turn in an emergency access lane. Video footage captured the moment a vehicle collided with Singh’s semi-truck.
Pannun clarified that he is not representing Singh in legal matters but advocates for him through Sikhs for Justice. After the crash, Singh reportedly exited the vehicle, attempted to assist an injured victim, and expressed concern by stating that help was on the way.
Following the incident, Singh returned to California, prompting Florida’s Lt. Governor Jay Collins to retrieve him for legal proceedings. Collins defended his actions, emphasizing the severity of the incident. “There are three lives lost,” Collins stated.
Singh is currently in the custody of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, having been transported back from California.
The news conference occurred after petitions urging leniency for Singh circulated online, gathering over 2 million signatures.
