Fatal Crash on Florida Turnpike Investigated as Documeted Immigrant Charged
FORT PIERCE, Fla. — A crash on Florida’s Turnpike on August 12 resulted in three fatalities and has drawn attention to the licensing status of the driver.
According to authorities, 35-year-old Harjinder Singh attempted an illegal U-turn near Mile Marker 170, placing his semi-truck in the path of a minivan. The ensuing collision killed all three passengers in the van. Singh has been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide.
Singh, an undocumented immigrant from India, held a valid California commercial driver’s license, which has prompted criticism from Governor Ron DeSantis. He stated, “He should never have been here. He certainly shouldn’t have gotten a commercial driver’s license from California.”
Emergency response teams attended the scene, and video footage of the incident has circulated online. Following the crash, Singh and a passenger fled to Sacramento, where U.S. Marshals arrested him on August 16 in Stockton, California.
U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi condemned California’s sanctuary policies, stating they facilitated Singh’s licensing. U.S. Marshals Director Gadyaces Serralta described the arrest as a success across state lines and agencies.
The incident has reignited discussions surrounding immigration policies and public safety on highways.
