Teen Dies in Moped Crash While Fleeing Traffic Stop in Belmont
A teenager on a moped died after crashing into an SUV while evading a traffic stop in Belmont, Massachusetts, on Tuesday morning.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:55 a.m. when the 18-year-old from Watertown made a turn onto Stults Road from Belmont Street. The moped had been seen driving the wrong way on Trapelo Road before police attempted to pull it over. The driver did not stop, and the collision happened several blocks later, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office and Belmont police. The identity of the teenager has not been released.
Emergency responders transported the teen to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries and was also taken for medical treatment.
Investigations are ongoing, with both state and local police examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have not disclosed additional information regarding the reasons for the moped driver’s attempt to evade police.
A nearby resident described the aftermath of the crash, stating that the moped was “totally demolished.”
