Brett James, Renowned Nashville Songwriter, Dies in Plane Crash
Brett James Cornelius, 57, a Grammy-winning songwriter known for co-writing Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus Take The Wheel,” died in a plane crash in Franklin, North Carolina, on September 18.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, a Cirrus SR22T plane carrying a pilot and two passengers crashed in a field near Iotla Valley Elementary School around 3 p.m. local time. As of now, authorities confirmed there are no survivors.
James, who was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020, leaves behind his wife, Sandra, and their four children. Over his career spanning more than 25 years, he co-wrote 27 No. 1 hits, including tracks for artists like Kenny Chesney and Uncle Kracker.
The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash. According to FlightAware, the ill-fated plane was registered to Cornelius.
Tributes poured in from the music community, highlighting James’ impact on country music. Dierks Bentley praised him for co-writing his hit “I Hold On,” while fellow songwriter Trannie Anderson spoke of James’ encouragement during her career.
James had also recently released an EP titled “I Am Now,” showcasing his continued influence in the industry.
