Brett James Cornelius, 57, was involved in a small-engine plane crash that occurred in a field. He was celebrated for his contributions to country music, particularly his collaboration on Underwood’s 2005 breakout single, which became her first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
James was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020. The song “Jesus, Take the Wheel” gained widespread acclaim, making the Opry’s list of the 100 Greatest Country Music Songs. Despite not being composed with Underwood in mind—she was a contestant on “American Idol” at the time—the song resonated with audiences after her victory in May 2005.
During a songwriting session with Hillary Lindsey and Gordie Sampson, the trio created what would become a defining track in country music. James recalled the overwhelming response, noting many fans shared how the song impacted their lives, often describing moments of divine intervention.
“I’ve been so blessed by her over the years,” James commented on his collaboration with Underwood, which included other hits like “Love Wins” and “Cowboy Casanova.”
