Roundabout Planned After Multiple Crashes at Jay Intersection

JAY — Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) is set to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Routes 133 and 156, known as Beans Corner, beginning in 2028.

The $3.6 million project aims to enhance safety at a site with a high incidence of crashes. A total of 35 crashes occurred from 2020 to 2022, including 28 right-angle collisions, prompting officials to implement a four-way stop as a temporary measure in May 2024. Since then, five crashes have been reported.

The project will be funded with 90% federal highway safety funds and 10% state funds. MDOT is currently gathering community input and plans to issue bids in fall 2027.

Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere noted that local agencies, including police and emergency services, have recommended a complete closure of the intersection during construction, which is expected to expedite the process. The Select Board has endorsed this recommendation based on community feedback.

MDOT has emphasized that input from residents will play a key role in traffic management during construction. Plans for the roundabout are in response to ongoing safety concerns, with officials stating that the design could significantly reduce the frequency and severity of collisions at the intersection.
