37-Year-Old Man Shot and Killed by Aurora Police After Traffic Incident
A 37-year-old Black man was shot and killed by an Aurora police officer during an attempted traffic stop on Saturday night, according to Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain.
Rajon Montrel Lee Belt-Stubblefield was traveling on East Sixth Avenue near Sable Boulevard when he was clocked speeding at 7:29 p.m. and did not yield when police activated lights and sirens. Instead, he crashed into two vehicles while fleeing.
Following the crash, Belt-Stubblefield exited his vehicle and threw a handgun into the grass. He reportedly approached the officer, ignored commands to stay in his car, and moved toward the officer despite warnings. Chief Chamberlain stated that the officer attempted to de-escalate the situation by physically engaging Belt-Stubblefield.
As Belt-Stubblefield became more aggressive, the officer shot him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officer involved has not been identified, pending an interview with the 18th Judicial District critical incident investigators. Chamberlain noted the officer had received threats against him and his family.
“This is not something the officer, the department or the city of Aurora wanted,” Chamberlain said. “It was the suspect's actions that escalated into this.”
The investigation is ongoing.
