Pilot Survives Plane Crash in Orange County, Indiana

A pilot has survived a plane crash in the dense woods of Orange County, Indiana, over the weekend. The single-engine Lancair went down late Saturday night near the Orange-Lawrence County line.

According to Indiana State Police, the Louisville Airport and the FAA reported the possible crash around 10 p.m. First responders faced a challenging search through miles of trees, with multiple emergency personnel, including fire trucks and police, combing the area.

The wreckage was discovered around 4 a.m. Sunday morning near Old Vincennes Road, with the pilot found alive inside the plane. “It’s all woods for the most part out in these parts, and it’s just kind of strange that something so small would go down and nobody heard anything,” said a local resident.

Rescue crews carried the pilot nearly a quarter mile through thick brush and steep terrain, involving nearly 60 firefighters and 20 officers in the effort. The pilot’s survival has been termed miraculous by witnesses.

On Monday, the Hoosier National Forest and U.S. Forest Service returned to assist with the ongoing investigation.
