NELSONVILLE, Ohio (WSYX) — A community gathered in Nelsonville on Sunday to honor Wellston Police Officer Matt Juniper, who died in a golf cart crash early Saturday morning.
Officer Juniper, 25, was riding in a golf cart with a fellow officer when their vehicle was struck by a car driven by a 17-year-old on South Pennsylvania Avenue. The collision occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. Authorities reported that Juniper did not survive the incident, while the condition of the other officer is currently unconfirmed.
Law enforcement from multiple agencies, including the Wellston Police Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and Athens County Sheriff’s Office, participated in the remembrance. The community observed a moment of silence as church bells rang throughout downtown Nelsonville.
According to witnesses, Officer Juniper was well-regarded and known for his service and kindness. Those who knew him expressed their grief, with many unable to comment on camera due to their emotions.
Friends and family will have an additional opportunity to pay their respects during Juniper’s funeral service scheduled for tomorrow. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
