Fiery Crash on I-70 Leads to Major Delays in Adams County
AURORA, Colo. — A crash involving two semi-trucks caused significant delays on eastbound Interstate 70 in Adams County Friday morning. The incident was reported around 8:20 a.m.
The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) confirmed that a 2026 Peterbilt and a 2020 Volvo were involved. The Volvo rear-ended the Peterbilt's trailer and subsequently caught fire after coming to a stop in the median. This led to the trailer tipping onto its side in the left lane of westbound I-70.
The fire spread to the grassy median, igniting cargo that spilled onto the roadway. Fortunately, both drivers emerged unharmed, and firefighters contained the blaze within an hour.
All lanes of I-70 were closed for several hours during the cleanup. The roadway has since reopened, but the driver of the Volvo is facing a charge of careless driving.
CSP noted there have been 3,829 reported crashes involving heavy trucks in Colorado this year, with over a thousand occurring on interstates. Denver County has recorded the highest number of heavy truck-related incidents, followed by Adams County.
In response to rising crash rates, trucking schools are emphasizing safety training for drivers and companies. Colorado lawmakers have also passed various laws aimed at reducing truck crashes, highlighting the need for effective enforcement.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
