46-Year-Old Charged in Fatal Motorcycle Crash near New Castle
New Castle, DE – A 46-year-old man has been charged with vehicular homicide following a fatal accident on Route 40 near Fir Avenue on Sept. 28.
Authorities said the crash occurred around 10 a.m. when a Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Omar Mendoza, failed to stop at a stop sign and entered the roadway diagonally, colliding with a westbound Suzuki motorcycle. The passenger of the motorcycle, a 44-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not been released pending notification of her family.
The motorcycle's operator, a 36-year-old man from Bear, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Mendoza also sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at an area hospital.
After his release, Mendoza was charged and subsequently committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after failing to post bail exceeding $10,000.
Delaware State Police continue to investigate the incident and are seeking additional information.
