Avon Teen Hit and Run Sentencing
A Hartford Superior Court judge sentenced Alex Rivera to 15 years in prison, suspended after 5 years served, for a hit-and-run accident that injured 16-year-old Liam Shields on Oct. 4, 2024.
Rivera, driving a Subaru, struck Liam while he was bicycling, then drove 4 miles with Liam on the roof before abandoning him. Liam, now 17, suffered a traumatic brain injury, requiring over six weeks in the hospital and ongoing rehabilitation.
In court, Liam recounted the lasting effects of the incident, stating, “This man tried to murder me… He has to be held accountable for his actions.”
Liam’s family shared their distress, highlighting Liam’s thoughtful nature and the impact of the crash on their lives. “Liam was robbed of mobility, cognitive skills, and, most importantly, his time,” his twin brother Andrew Shields said.
Rivera, who has served 11 months, will begin a 3-year probation after his prison term. In addressing the court, he expressed deep remorse for his actions.
The judge highlighted the severity of Rivera’s actions, emphasizing the lack of compassion shown. “That shows a flaw that… society can’t condone,” the judge remarked.
The defense attorney stated that the sentence was within expected parameters.
