Fatal crash on I-65 claims life of Indiana Guardsman

LEBANON, Ind. (WISH) — One soldier died and three others were injured in a three-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 65 near Lebanon on November 14.

The Indiana National Guard identified the deceased as Specialist Terry Frye, 28, from Lafayette. Frye had served in the Guard since March 2020 with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 151st Infantry Regiment. In his five years of service, he received the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

The soldiers were traveling from the Frankfort Armory to Camp Atterbury for a drill weekend when the crash occurred near I-865. The Boone County Sheriff’s Office reported that the involved vehicles included a military Humvee, a white SUV, and a semitruck carrying cars.

As of Friday, the three injured soldiers were in serious condition. The crash remains under investigation, with authorities not yet providing information regarding the cause.

Sgt. Tyler Moriarty of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office stated that military-related accidents are rare and urged drivers to exercise caution.

The Indiana National Guard expressed its condolences to Frye’s family and friends, emphasizing their responsibility to service members and their loved ones. Indiana Gov. Mike Braun also extended sympathies, stressing the need for community support during tragic times.
