Cottage Grove Man Dies in Four-Vehicle Crash on Highway 99

Joseph M. Peters, 35, died June 17 following a four-vehicle crash on Highway 99 near milepost 10 in Lane County.

According to the Oregon State Police, a white Chevrolet Silverado dually pickup truck, driven by 46-year-old Sheldon Bryce Moore of Creswell, was traveling southbound when it slowed to negotiate a turn. Peters, operating a blue Mazda Tribute southbound, rear-ended a stopped white Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by Tenielle Lynette Long-Piccolo of Cottage Grove.

The Mazda subsequently veered into the northbound lane and collided with a white Ford F-350 pickup, driven by Marcelo Analco Garcia of Eugene, who was towing a dump trailer loaded with dirt and rocks.

Peters was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Long-Piccolo, her 14-year-old daughter, and a 9-year-old girl were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Analco Garcia sustained minor injuries, and Moore was unharmed.

Traffic on Highway 99 was disrupted for three hours during the investigation. The precise cause of the crash remains unclear as the investigation is ongoing.
