Fatal Crash Near Kokomo Claims One Life

KOKOMO, Ind. (WISH) — One person died in a crash early August 6 west of Kokomo, according to the Howard County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 12:13 a.m. at the intersection of State Road 22 and County Road 700 West, a Jeep Wrangler collided with a Chevrolet Terrain, subsequently catching fire. Firefighters responded quickly, but efforts by the Chevrolet driver and other motorists to rescue the Jeep’s driver were unsuccessful due to the extreme heat from the flames.

The Jeep driver, identified as 43-year-old Michael Hodges, died at the scene. Investigators state that the Jeep was traveling westbound when it struck the rear passenger side of the Chevrolet, causing it to leave the roadway and crash into a tree in a ditch.

Authorities confirmed that the Chevrolet driver cooperated with law enforcement on site. They reported that alcohol was not a factor in the incident.

The crash remains under investigation. The Howard County Sheriff’s Office requests anyone with information to contact Sgt. Christopher Cramer at 765-614-3474.
