Fatal crash kills Officer Matt Juniper in Wellston, Ohio.

WELLSTON, Ohio (WSYX) — A community is mourning the loss of Officer Matt Juniper, who died in a crash involving a Hyundai that struck a golf cart he was riding in at approximately 2 a.m. on Saturday. The incident occurred on South Pennsylvania Avenue near E. 6th St.

Officer Brant Derrow, who was operating the golf cart, was seriously injured but has since been released from the hospital. The 17-year-old driver of the Hyundai sustained minor injuries.

Witnesses described the crash as “the loudest collision” they’ve heard in the area. “I didn’t hear any brakes. The car pushed [the golf cart] back and hit one of the trees,” said Connie Holtz, a resident near the scene.

Juniper had been with the Wellston Police Department since 2021, previously serving with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. Known for his dedication, he leaves behind his one-year-old son and a department of ten officers grappling with his loss.

Police Chief John Robinson called Juniper an “ideal officer,” recognized for his commitment to public safety and community service. The incident is under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, and it has not been determined if the teenager will face charges.

Calling hours for Officer Juniper are set for Wednesday, September 3, from 4-8 p.m. at Warren-Brown Funeral Home, with his funeral scheduled for Thursday, September 4. Donations are being accepted for his family and for a new K-9 unit.
