Fatal crash in Fort Fairfield claims lives of couple

Limestone Man Dies Following Crash in Fort Fairfield

A Limestone man died Tuesday evening from injuries sustained in a crash in Fort Fairfield that also claimed his wife’s life, according to Fort Fairfield Police Chief Matthew Cummings.

Pierre Gagne, 72, and Carrie Smith-Gagne, 60, were traveling north on Route 1A around 10 a.m. in a 2023 Chevy Trailblazer when a 2012 Chevy Impala heading south crossed the center line and collided with their vehicle. Smith-Gagne was pronounced dead at the scene, while Gagne was transported to Cary Medical Center in Caribou, where he succumbed to his injuries later that evening. Both were wearing seat belts.

Amber Turcotte, 25, and Casey Clayton, 37, occupants of the Impala, were ejected during the crash. Turcotte was taken to A.R. Gould Hospital in Presque Isle, and Clayton was transported to Cary Medical Center, both suffering life-threatening injuries. Cummings did not specify who was driving the Impala.

According to Cummings, the collision occurred when the Impala’s driver drove onto the dirt shoulder and overcorrected, resulting in the accident.

The area around 854 Limestone Road was closed until 3:30 p.m. Tuesday for investigation, with assistance from multiple agencies, including Fort Fairfield Fire and Rescue and Maine State Police. The crash is under investigation by Fort Fairfield Police Sgt. Jesse Cormier.
