Eagles Secure New Backup QB Sam Howell Ahead of Season Opener
PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Eagles have acquired quarterback Sam Howell from the Minnesota Vikings as a backup option for the upcoming season, with just under 10 days before opening against the Dallas Cowboys on September 4.
Howell, who was traded on August 24, faces a condensed timeline to learn the team's offense. He is stepping in after backup Tanner McKee sustained a broken thumb, rendering his status for the opener uncertain. Howell's first practice with the Eagles coincided with McKee's limited activity due to his injury.
In related news, the Eagles welcomed back key players A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Landon Dickerson to practice. Brown and Smith had missed considerable training time, while Dickerson's return is noteworthy following knee surgery on August 16.
Howell, previously a fifth-round pick for the Commanders, noted his familiarity with learning new offenses, stating, “I feel like I do pretty well in learning things pretty fast, so I'll be ready to go.” Last season, Washington finished 4-13 with Howell starting all games.
Eagles Coach Nick Sirianni has yet to confirm the participation status of Brown and Smith for the season opener. Further updates will be provided as the team prepares for the Cowboys.
