Crash lowers bridge, kills six construction workers near Baltimore.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WBFF) — The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is set to vote on findings related to the March 2024 collision of the container ship Dali with the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which resulted in the deaths of six construction workers.

The vote follows Maryland officials’ announcement of revised cost estimates for the bridge’s replacement, now projected between $4.3 billion and $5.2 billion, more than double the initial estimate of $1.9 billion. The completion date has been moved to 2030.

NTSB Chairperson Jennifer Homendy stated, “This tragedy should never have occurred. Lives should never have been lost,” emphasizing the preventable nature of the incident. Investigators revealed a loose signal wire caused a loss of electrical power and steering capability as the Dali departed the Port of Baltimore.

Authorities indicated that the vessel lacked infrared imaging technology, which could have identified systemic faults. The NTSB also criticized the state for not having a warning system to alert crews of approaching vessels.

Governor Wes Moore noted that initial rebuilding estimates were made shortly after the bridge collapse, but worsening economic conditions and material costs have since escalated expenses.

The NTSB is meeting in Washington to determine the probable cause of the crash, safety recommendations, and any necessary updates to previous reports.
