Lowe’s Tragedy: 12-year-old Killed, Two Injured in Rollover Crash
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A rollover crash on the Gene Snyder Freeway near New Cut Road early Monday morning resulted in the death of 12-year-old Jada Smith and injuries to two other family members.
Authorities said a vehicle driven by 34-year-old Renaldo Gill collided with a Jeep operated by Jasmine Simpson, causing it to overturn. Both Simpson and her children were ejected from the vehicle. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gill, who has been charged with murder and DUI, appeared in court on Tuesday. His bond was initially set at $250,000 but later increased to $500,000. He has been ordered not to contact the victims or their families.
Family members reported that Simpson sustained multiple serious injuries, including broken legs, an arm, and a jaw. According to witnesses, neither Simpson nor her daughter was wearing seatbelts, and the child’s car seat was improperly secured. Simpson is also facing charges of wanton endangerment and failure to wear seatbelts.
A GoFundMe page has been launched to assist with medical expenses and funeral costs. The family is currently focused on healing and understanding the circumstances surrounding the crash, stating, “We don’t know where she was going.”
The incident remains under investigation, with Gill’s next court appearance scheduled for September 10.
