Wilmington Police Therapy Dog Killed in Tewksbury Crash
TEWKSBURY, MA – A three-year-old comfort dog named Zena, a Bernedoodle, was killed in a head-on collision on Tuesday morning, according to the Wilmington Police Department.
Zena was traveling with her handler, Clinician Samantha Cavanaugh, when another driver reportedly crossed the double yellow line, striking their Toyota Camry. Cavanaugh sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
The department announced that Zena was rushed to an area animal hospital but did not survive. Her transport by ambulance was facilitated under Nero's Law, which mandates emergency medical assistance for injured police dogs.
Zena joined the Wilmington Police Department in 2022, when she was just 8 weeks old. She was primarily used as a comfort animal, visiting schools, senior centers, and community events. Zena was part of the Wilmington Police Health and Recovery Unit, assisting with behavioral and mental health outreach.
“Zena was a beloved member of our Wilmington Police family and the community,” Chief Brian Pupa stated. “Her calming presence helped residents during difficult times, and her legacy will endure.”
The Tewksbury Police Department is investigating the crash.
