Tow Truck Crash Injures Officer and K9 in Madison

MADISON (WKOW) — A flatbed tow truck driver crashed into a Madison police squad car on Sept. 27, injuring an officer and his K9 partner. Authorities identified the driver as 36-year-old Christopher P. Brugger of Madison.

According to the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, Brugger faces charges of first-degree reckless injury. The Monona Police Department plans to submit multiple charges, including felony counts for reckless endangerment and operating after revocation, as well as numerous traffic violations.

The Wisconsin State Patrol is also referring charges for fourth offense OWI and possession of methamphetamines. Dash cam footage shows Brugger driving recklessly on Highway 51 before officers pursued him. The pursuit concluded on Terminal Drive, where Brugger collided with the squad car.

Officer Ryan Kimberley and his K9 partner, Freddie, were extracted from the vehicle moments before it ignited. Kimberley sustained severe injuries, requiring multiple surgeries. Freddie suffered a paw injury but is expected to recover.

Brugger attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended shortly thereafter; he had an outstanding warrant for probation and parole violations. Monona Police Chief Brian Chaney confirmed Brugger’s previous involvement in a collision with a police vehicle.

Brugger remains in the Dane County Jail. A fundraiser has been established to assist Officer Kimberley and his family during his recovery.
