NEWTON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — A woman died following a collision with an SUV in rural Newton County on Friday evening.
The crash occurred around 6:13 p.m. near County Road 600 East, just north of C.R. 1125. According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, a 40-year-old woman from Hebron was driving a Hyundai passenger car when she collided with a Ford SUV towing a camper.
The woman hit the driver’s side of the SUV before crashing into the camper, causing substantial damage to both vehicles. She sustained severe injuries and was trapped inside her vehicle until emergency crews extricated her.
The woman was airlifted to a hospital in Chicago but died shortly after her arrival. The 49-year-old man from Demotte driving the SUV declined medical treatment at the scene.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the crash or the victim’s identity. The roadway was closed for more than seven hours while emergency responders managed the scene.
