Two killed in crash due to damaged stop sign

Double Fatal Crash in Mayfield Township Linked to Damaged Stop Sign

MAYFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) — A damaged stop sign is being blamed for a double fatal crash that occurred early Friday morning.

At approximately 12:05 a.m. on September 12, Michigan State Police (MSP) from the Traverse City Post responded to a two-vehicle collision on County Road 633 near Miller Road.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a white Jeep, carrying two passengers, was traveling west on Miller Road, while a gray Jeep with two occupants was moving south on County Road 633. According to MSP, the white Jeep failed to stop at the intersection due to a damaged stop sign, which was previously knocked down and lying in a ditch. The vehicle was struck on the passenger side by the southbound gray Jeep.

The driver of the white Jeep, a 33-year-old woman from Northport, was transported to the hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. The passenger, a 39-year-old man from Gaylord, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the gray Jeep, a 47-year-old woman from Copemish, and her passenger, a 15-year-old female from the same area, were both taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities do not believe that speed or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation by MSP.
