Lede: A year after a tragic boat crash in Old Saybrook, family and friends honor the memory of Christopher Hallahan and advocate for water safety.
According to family members, Christopher Hallahan, along with two others, lost their lives in a boating incident on Labor Day last year. The crash occurred at the break wall at the mouth of the Connecticut River. The boat's driver had a blood alcohol content (BAC) twice the legal limit and was arrested; his case is ongoing.
Brittney Hallahan, Chris's wife, reflected on their relationship, stating, “He always made everyone laugh,” and emphasized Chris's commitment to community service through his family's construction business.
To commemorate him, Brittney and sister-in-law Cydney Hallahan organized a charity bike race called “Ride with Hal,” starting at 8 a.m. on Sunday from Westbrook High School. Part of the proceeds will benefit the Sea Tow Foundation's Sober Skipper Campaign, promoting designated drivers on watercraft.
Cydney Hallahan noted, “Being impaired can leave you unprepared for emergencies on the water.” Brittney urged celebration of life and responsibility this holiday weekend, saying, “Live your life. Do the things you want to do.”
Registration for “Ride with Hal” closes at 7:45 a.m. on Sunday. For further details, visit Ride with Hal.
