Millsboro Man Sentenced to 17.5 Years for Fatal Christmas Eve Crash
A Millsboro man has been sentenced to 17.5 years in prison for his involvement in a Christmas Eve 2022 crash that resulted in three fatalities.
According to the Delaware Superior Court, Jason Wilcox, 48, was convicted on multiple charges, including three counts of manslaughter and three counts of first-degree assault. He was sentenced by Judge Mark Conner on Jan. 17, with mandatory minimums taken into account.
On the night of the incident, Wilcox was driving a 2016 Range Rover at nearly 80 mph on Route 9 when he collided with a 2008 Honda Odyssey driven by Jason Wright, who was attempting to turn from Minos Conaway Road. Authorities stated that Wilcox fled the scene without aiding the injured or calling 9-1-1.
The crash ejected Gerald Huss, 74, and Jovie Wright, 9, from the Odyssey, both of whom died at the scene. Jessica Guida, 35, succumbed to her injuries later. Several passengers sustained serious injuries but survived.
Wilcox faced accusations of reckless driving, as prosecutors noted that he exceeded the speed limit by nearly 30 mph. His attorney argued that Wright was partially at fault for the accident.
During sentencing, emotional victim impact statements were delivered, highlighting the profound effects on the families of the deceased. Deputy Attorney General Barzilai Axelrod emphasized the irreversible damage caused by Wilcox’s actions.
Wilcox expressed remorse during the hearing and plans to appeal his conviction. Judge Conner characterized Wilcox’s behavior as cowardly and devastating to the victims’ families.
