FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — A crash on Florida's Turnpike on Aug. 12 resulted in three fatalities and raised questions about the licensing of an undocumented immigrant.
According to authorities, 35-year-old Harjinder Singh made an illegal U-turn on the Turnpike near Fort Pierce, placing his semi-truck in front of a minivan. The minivan collided with the truck, killing all three passengers. Singh faces three counts of vehicular homicide.
Singh, an undocumented immigrant from India, held a valid commercial driver's license issued in California. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis criticized this, stating, “That should have never happened.” He emphasized the inappropriateness of Singh obtaining the license.
Following the incident, U.S. Marshals Service reported that Singh and a passenger flew to Sacramento. On Aug. 16, he was arrested in Stockton, California, with an immigration detainer filed by ICE.
U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi condemned California's sanctuary policies, claiming they enabled Singh to acquire a license. The crash has reignited discussions on immigration enforcement, state licensing regulations, and highway safety.
The investigation continues as the community grapples with the consequences of this tragic event.
