School bus accident injures 17 students on first day.

LEANDER, Texas (KEYE) — A school carrying 42 students overturned Wednesday on Nameless Road, injuring 17 students during the first day of class, authorities said.

The Leander ISD was traveling south on a slight curve when it left the roadway and rolled onto its side shortly after school dismissal. The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the cause, and it remains unclear if weather played a role.

Austin-Travis County EMS responded to the scene around 3:15 p.m. and reported 43 patients from the incident, with 12 requiring immediate transport. A total of 15 students and the bus driver were taken to nearby hospitals, including Dell Children's Center and Cedar Park Regional Medical Center.

Two individuals sustained serious injuries, but all affected are currently in stable condition. Earlier reports indicated that 12 people were hospitalized; however, additional evaluations led to more transports.

The bus, operated by an experienced driver, was equipped with state-regulated seatbelts that students were required to wear, according to Texas DPS Public Information Officer Billy Ray.

Emergency response included 10 transport units: six ambulances from Austin-Travis County EMS, and two STAR Flight helicopters. A reunification center for families was established at Round Mountain Baptist Church.

This incident follows recent severe flooding in the area, impacting local families. Leander ISD Superintendent Bruce Gearing expressed condolences, emphasizing support for the affected students and their families.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the rollover.
