Crash on Arrigoni Bridge Claims Life of 70-Year-Old Jozef Baran

MIDDLETOWN — Jozef Baran, 70, of Middletown, died in a head-on collision on the Arrigoni Bridge in Portland on Nov. 11 at 8:43 p.m.

According to police, Baran was driving a red Subaru westbound when he collided with an eastbound black Ford Escape, driven by a 31-year-old woman from Portland. She was taken to Hartford Hospital with unspecified injuries. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Born in Poland, Baran is survived by three children: Przemek Baran of Middletown, Daniel Baran-Wilkie of Clinton, Massachusetts, and Basia Usdan of Harwinton. He was also a grandfather to two grandchildren.

Baran was remembered in his obituary as a generous individual who enjoyed fishing, restoring cars, and helping others.

The funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary of Czestochowa Catholic Church, located at 79 South Main St., Middletown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in his memory.
