Fatal Crash Involving Columbus Blue Jackets Players' Deaths Under Investigation
A driver accused of being under the influence during a fatal crash in Oldmans Township, New Jersey, on August 29, 2024, is set to appear in court on October 29. Sean Higgins, 44, faces charges including reckless vehicular homicide and aggravated manslaughter, following the deaths of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau, 31, and his brother Matthew, 29.
The upcoming evidentiary hearing will determine if statements Higgins made to New Jersey State Police can be used as evidence. Higgins' attorneys contend that his Miranda rights were violated during police questioning after the crash. Conversely, prosecutors claim Higgins was informed of his rights multiple times and understood them.
According to police reports, Higgins passed two vehicles on a roadway where the Gaudreau brothers were bicycling. Witnesses stated both vehicles had slowed for the cyclists. Higgins allegedly admitted to consuming several beers prior to the incident, which resulted in him crashing into the brothers before fleeing the scene.
A blood test conducted that night revealed Higgins' blood alcohol level was 0.087, exceeding the legal limit. He previously rejected a plea deal that would have imposed a 35-year prison sentence.
The investigation continues, with the court hearing anticipated to include testimony from four witnesses.
Authorities, including local law enforcement, are handling the ongoing investigation.
