17 Students Injured in Leander School Bus Accident

LEANDER, Texas (KEYE) — A Leander ISD school carrying 42 students overturned Wednesday at approximately 3:15 p.m. on Nameless Road, injuring 17 individuals, authorities reported.

Preliminary investigations indicate the bus was traveling south on a slight curve when it veered off the roadway and rolled onto its side, shortly after school dismissal. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) noted that it remains unclear if rainy weather played a role in the crash.

Emergency responders identified a total of 43 patients from the incident, with 12 requiring transport. Fifteen injured students and the bus driver were taken to various hospitals, with some transported by STAR Flight due to the rural location of the accident. Two individuals sustained serious injuries, but all patients are currently in stable condition.

Leander ISD Superintendent Bruce Gearing expressed condolences, emphasizing that the community has faced significant challenges this summer, including recent floods. A reunification center for families was established at Round Mountain Baptist Church, located at 14500 Round Mountain Road.

The bus was equipped with state-regulated seatbelts, and an experienced driver was operating the vehicle. The cause of the rollover is under investigation, with multiple agencies, including the Travis County Sheriff’s Office and the Leander Fire Department, responding to the scene.

Authorities stated that a full investigation will continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
